Tony Elumelu Makes TIME Impacts Awards List

The business mogul has gained global recognition for his philanthropic activities

Nigerian billionaire, Tony Elumelu, has emerged recipient of the TIME 100 Impact Awards 2022. The banking tycoon and Chairman of Heirs Holdings bagged the award for his selfless humanitarian activities and support for scaling up businesses in Africa for Africans.

The TIME 100 Impact Awards recognize global actors who have made tremendous efforts toward moving the world forward. Elumelu alongside six other recipients were honoured with the award presented at the Museum of the Future in Dubai.

An excited Elumelu called for the need to have more entrepreneurs and investments across the globe in other to push greatly for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs. Mr Elumelu during his acceptance speech reminisced on his humble beginnings and recalled how he had to work really hard and focus to establish the Tony Elumelu Foundation. So far, the Foundation has supported over 15,000 startups with a capital of $5,000.

“The world is in need of people like us—more than ever before,” Elumelu said during the ceremony.

“We should pull resources together; we should commit now to help in any way possible in economically empowering others.”

The inaugural edition of the TIME 100 Gala and Impact Awards is the first major event that has taken place at the Museum of the Future since February 22, 2022, when it was officially opened.

In attendance were high profile personalities such as civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen, who made the Time’s first Women of the Year list this month, Nigerian actor and philanthropist, Omotola Jalade Ekeinde, Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi who gained popularity as the first woman in the United Arab Emirate (UAE) to hold a ministerial position, and others.
