Tiwa Savage Makes History At MTV EMA

Nigerian music sensation, Tiwa Savage, has made history as the first female artiste to win the award for the Best African Act at the MTV Europe Music Awards. The Afro-pop singer was nominated alongside fellow Nigerian and former EMA award winner, Davido, South Africa’s DistructionBoyz and Shekinah, DRC’s Fally Ipupa and Nyashinski from Kenya. She was presented the award at Sunday’s MTV Europe Music Awards which held at the Bilbao Exhibition Center, Bilbao, Spain. By this feat, Tiwa Savage has joined the league of Nigerian winners of the prestigious award category which include the 2017 winner – Davido, two time winner; Dbanj (2007 and 2012), and Tuface Idibia (2005). She won the award having only been nominated for the first time unlike Wizkid, who has had 4 nominations, Davido 3, and P Square 2. The singer posted a celebratory message on her Instagram page, appreciating God and her team and dedicated fans, while dedicating the award to African Women.

The 38 year old, Tiwatope Savage, joined Don Jazzy’s Mavin Records label as the first female signing in 2012, released her first studio recorded song “Once Upon a Time” in July 2013, and has since then had at least 39 award nominations, 15 awards won, endorsement deals with MTN Nigeria, Konga, Forte Oil, Maggi, P & G Nigeria and Pepsi to mention a few. She co-wrote Collard Greens & Cornbread, a song off American singer, Fantasia’s, Grammy-nominated album titled “Back to Me”, and has contracts with Sony/ATV Music Publishing, ROC Nation and 323 Entertainment. The African act category, was introduced into the MTV EMA in 2005 with 2baba being its first winner. It is aimed at promoting cultural integrations and enhancing cross-border musical alliances.
