The summit is part of a broader initiative that runs under the tag, Innovative Solutions to Combat Period Poverty. It will include, among other things, a discussion of the impact of period poverty on Nigerian women and the broader economy. Period Poverty has a largely unmeasured but anecdotally significant impact on Nigerian women and girls. About 62% of the 10.5 million out-of-school children in the country are girls. Many of them have had to drop out of school early on due to the lack of hygiene products and facilities that would help maintain their dignity while on their periods. A result of the paucity of safe feminine hygiene solutions has resulted in lower productivity and presence at the workplace for many women. This has negatively impacted their earning potential, their ability to command respect in the corporate space, and ultimately, their socio-economic status.

Earlier this year, Safety for Every Girl organized an essay competition for teens and young adults which aimed at spotlighting possible remedies for period poverty in Nigeria. The competition received widespread press coverage and collected many smart ideas from women and girls all over the country. The Innovative Solutions to Combat Period Poverty summit will carry on with the talking points of the essay competition, by bringing the subject of period poverty to a more august and influential stage. A high-powered panel will be discussing issues around the event’s theme. Panelists include Bola Matel-Okoh, Executive Coach and CEO, BMO Advisory; Chimezu Arogundade, Legal Officer, Lukefield Finance Company; Eku Edewor, Actor and Producer; and Chisom Ndukwe, Senior VP, Human Resources, Pan African Towers. The session will be moderated by Beauty Tukura, the 43rd Miss Nigeria.
