Despite all of its popularity, today very few of us truly know what meditation is. The word meditation carries different meanings in different contexts. Meditation has been practiced since antiquity as a component of numerous religious traditions and beliefs.
Meditation isn’t;
Concentration and fixing attention on a particular object or idea for a long period of time.
Exercising, breathing and postures.
An exercise that requires mental effort and using the brain.
Meditation has its advantages and isn’t harmful to the body when practiced effectively as it is known to lower stress. The journal of Health Psychology shows that mindfulness is not only associated with feelings of reduced stress; it is also linked with reduced levels of cortisol- a stress hormone. The journal of Psychological Science shows that mindfulness can help in self revelation, in identifying and reducing flaws, improving grades and performance, giving a feeling of mindfulness, and aid in lowering the risk of depression.
The state of our bodies determines how best we can function. If the body is stressed and one is anxious and depressed, it is normal for the person not to function optimally. Meditation can help bring a little calm in the midst of a chaotic environment.
Meditation can be done anywhere and anytime but is advised to be done routinely, particularly at the same time daily. Meditation can be practiced in any location; at the office, in the car or at home, as long as the individual will be comfortable and won’t be distracted or disturbed. It is recommended to meditate at least 20 minutes daily for optimal performance.
There is no rule to meditation, different cultures have their ways. For our environment Nigeria, 20 minutes spent in front of the wall saying reassuring words to yourself will help lower stress and anxiety.
It is argued that meditation techniques are for people in the western world but before closing your mind to the word meditation, it is advised you try blocking your problems and all the worries you have in the world out for 20 minutes daily for at least a week. What do you have to lose?
