Chinese mobile phone maker, Tecno, says it plans to establish a manufacturing plant in Lagos. It has secured land for this purpose in “one of the choicest areas in Lagos”, an executive of the company in Nigeria has revealed.
Tecno is seeking to expand its presence in Nigeria even further, following its impressive performance in the country’s mobile phone market. Its strategy of making inexpensive smartphones available in developing countries has paid off- it now controls about 25.3 percent of the market in Nigeria, according to Tecno marketing executive, Jesse Oguntimehin. The Nigerian market is Tecno’s biggest on the continent, ahead of Kenya and Tanzania. Now the mobile device maker has decided to put its money where its mouth is, by locating a factory in what has become lucrative territory for its business.
Oguntimehin also spoke about Tecno’s Phantom 6 series, its new product range launched in Dubai, UAE in September. He described the Phantom 6 Plus as a “beast” with great specifications that enable smartphone users to do more with it than they would on a typical mobile phone- very high-resolution dual rear cameras, lower battery power consumption, much greater speed, and a slimness that makes it easy on the eyes and hands.
The campaign by the Asian phone maker to gain a significant space in the Nigerian market began with it marketing mobile devices considered ‘just good enough’ for a burgeoning smartphone consumer base. It has since expanded its focus by making products which rival the higher end brands for capability and slickness while maintaining its core strength of relatively lower product price. This has helped it capture a greater share of the phones market in Nigeria.
