When we are in desperate need of a job, we most often want to get any
job as long we can take off that tag, ”unemployed”. However, before long, after getting the job, we begin to wonder if the job was worth dying for as we thought. Occasionally, desperation gets the best of us and we fail to take cognizance of red flags before accepting a job. In this article, I pointed out six red flags to note before signing up for the acceptance paper.

Recurring Vacant Position
If you’re within the company but working in another department, and you’ve been called upon to take up a new
role, before you dive in, ensure you do your background check before accepting that particular job. For instance, if you’re informed that sales managers do not last three weeks into employment it’s a red flag. Ask for some other positions. If you get into a job you know nothing about, you’re likely to make the same mistakes. Know why the vacancy exists and if the complaints follow a similar pattern, it is left for the employer to fix it, not you.
-
Unreasonable Expectations
If you’ve been employed newly or you’re to get a new position within a company, ensure you make enquiries about what is expected of you. For instance, you’ve been newly employed as a salesperson and you’ve been mandated to bring humanly impossible returns, speak up before you accept such a position. Don’t plunge into such a job out of desperation.

When There’s Secrecy Within The Workspace
When you perceive that there’s some form of concealment within a workspace, it’s advisable to decline such a job offer. For example, if it gets to your notice that most positions are vacant or people are incessantly leaving the company, it’s advisable to look for an exit route to avoid stories that touch. Further, if you observe that you can’t meet with fellow team workers in the company due to company restraint, that’s a red flag. If your
employer is hesitant about revealing salaries, healthcare allowances and so on, then something must be fishy.

Work Without Pay Under The Guise Of Probation
When you’re asked to work for some time without pay or little pay, it’s an indication that such an employer is exploitative or engages in employee micromanagement or the company is going through a financial crisis. It’s important to avoid such job offers to save yourself hurt and pain in the future.
-
Unclear Goals
Before taking up a job, ensure the goals are well spelt out. The opposite of not knowing the goal of the company is that you might find yourself working without a sense of purpose and direction. When there is no milestone to be reached, it might frustrate your work ethic and you might find yourself running in circles, working without drive and having a feeling of disenchantment. Sitting in a vague role can be mentally sapping, especially if you’re goal-oriented.

Culture Clash
This is very important to consider. It’s advisable to work in an office where the values and that of your company are in alignment. For example, if you believe in honesty, but your new role or the culture around the office reeks of dubiousness, it might affect your sanity. Further, if you believe in collaboration, but employers are in a habit of pitting employees against each other, all in the name of competition, it’s a red flag.
