The list of nominations for the 67
th Grammy Awards is out, with seven Nigerians making the cut. Davido, Burna Boy, Fireboy, Asake, Olamide, Tems, and Ayra Star have all been nominated for the 2024 edition of the Grammy Awards. However, out of the seven Nigerians on the
Grammy nominations list, only
Burna Boy and
Tems are returning nominees.
Interestingly, 2023 has been an incredible year for the Nigerian music industry both at home and abroad. With the release of singles, EPs, and albums that have enjoyed astonishing international acceptance, it is no surprise that six Nigerians have made it to the nominations list for the 2024 awards.
Burna Boy, who is already used to the Grammy nominations frenzy, was nominated four times in the following categories:
- Best African Music Performance – City Boys
- Best Global Music Performance – Alone
- Best Global Music Album – I Told Them
- Best Melodic Rap Performance – Sitting On Top Of The World
Davido, who arguably stole the show in the Nigerian music industry for 2023 with his Timeless album, bagged three nominations.
- Best Global Music Album – Timeless
- Best Global Music Performance – Feel
- Best African Music Performance – Unavailable feat. Musa Keys
Furthermore, the other Nigerians on the list grabbed one nomination apiece to complete the tally of Nigerians nominated for the 2024 Grammy Awards.
Best Song Written for Visual Media
- Lift Me Up “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” – Music inspired by Tems, Ryan Coogler, Ludwig Göransson, Robyn Fenty Ryan Coogler, Ludwig Göransson, and Robyn Fenty
Best African Music Performance
- “Amapiano,” – Asake and Olamide
- “Rush,” – Ayra Starr
Fireboy, on the other hand, was nominated in the Album of the Year category for his contribution to Jon Batiste’s World Music Radio.
However, as interesting and laudable as this list is, there was a loud omission, Rema. Rema arguably had the biggest song in the world in 2023 (Calm Down feat, Selena Gomez), in terms of the numbers that it did on streaming platforms. Thus, it was a no-brainer for a lot of people for Rema to be in the mix.
