Indictment and Legal Challenges

Despite his contributions to the aviation sector, Onyema faced legal challenges in 2019 when the US Department of Justice issued an indictment against him. He was accused of money laundering and bank fraud related to the purchase of aeroplanes for Air Peace. Allegations were made that Onyema falsified documents for the aircraft purchases and used the funds for personal luxury expenses. Although Onyema denies these accusations, in October 2022, one of his alleged co-conspirators pleaded guilty and was sentenced. However, Onyema and the Chief Financial Officer of Air Peace still face charges of criminality.
