Meet The Boss: Lola Shoneyin Discusses The Business Of Writing

  In Connect Nigeria’s “Meet The Boss” series, Lola Shoneyin, founder of Ouida, a leading publishing house in Africa and the organizer of Ake Art Book Festival and Kaduna Book and Art Festival speaks with presenter Williams Ozumba on the business of book publishing and intellectual Property Protection to mark this year’s World Book And Copyright Day.

Lola Shoneyin who is a mother of four, author of “The Secret Lives Of Baba Segi’s Wives”, and several works of poetry began writing at a very young age. She studied creative writing at Ogun State University where her writing and poetry attracted the admiration of her teachers who advised her to become a professional writer. She recounted that at age 23 she founded her first publishing house to help give voices to new writers, especially women writers.

She spoke of her ordeal getting into the publishing system, which inspired her to publish Ouida so that future writers will not suffer the indignity she went through. She revealed that in the same building as her bookstore, there is a workspace for writers who want the right environment for their writing and a conference centre for events such as workshops.
