So the concept of co-working has been on the rise since the introduction of terms like digital nomads, e-freelancing, distributed teams and so forth. The concept has also gained popularity due to vocations and careers that rely mainly on the internet including internet businesses, blogging/vlogging etc. that do not require traditional office environments to get work done. Let us take the advantages first though some advantages can also be disadvantages.
Distractions
If you have ever tried working from home, then you know it comes with a myriad of distractions including your TV and favourite shows, pets, family and seriously your bed. Working from a co-work space isolates you from these and allows to you separate work from family life. It gives you structure.
Increased Efficiency
How many times have you heard people say working with likeminded people help you achieve more? A lot I suppose. Co-working allows you to share a space filled with people busy working on their passion projects and that energy definitely rubs off on you leading to higher productivity.
The Community and Networking
Have you ever had a technical problem with your blog or website and searched the entire internet but could not get a quick fix? In co-working spaces, chances are that someone within that space may be a geek and that is the start of the solution you need. The community also offers you the opportunity to interact with like-minded individuals working on their own projects and businesses that might offer you the services you need or are looking for your services – your first client in some cases.
Cost and Flexibility
I think this is a very strong reason why most people especially start-ups consider coworking. If you have ever considered the cost of renting, furnishing and running an office space in Victoria Island, Lagos, then you would understand this. A co-working space takes care of all of that and allows you to rent the space on much shorter and flexible terms. Let’s not even discuss the cost of running a generator when NEPA fails.
Business Validation
This also has to do with start-ups. Self-doubt as a small business owner is not uncommon. Coworking allows you surround yourself with fellow entrepreneurs and other businesses that can provide immediate feedback for your project and can encourage you to make the right business decisions.

Now let us consider the cons.
The Right Space
Finding the right space is usually tricky and takes some time given that different spaces have different cultures, ideologies and cater for different kinds of members.
Distraction
While coworking keeps you safe from the distractions that easily beset you at home, it can also be an issue if you are easily distracted and socialise a lot.
Membership Cost
Though a unique feature of co-working is lower costs, some spaces are expensive and if you are on a shoestring budget, then it becomes an issue. Think it is a joke? Try Lekki.
The Community
Given the advantages the community can offer, if you are a person who expects a certain set of traits from people you share a space with you might get shocked once in a while. The dressing, behaviour and appearance of your space mates might not suit you always.
Location
This is an additional cost if your co-work space is not close to your residence. Getting a location closer to your residence should help as long as you don’t compromise on other needs. Traffic and stress should also be considered.
