Nigeria’s heroine, Dr. Stella Adadevoh, who saved the nation from the Ebola outbreak in 2014, would have turned 62 today had she not contracted the deadly virus from Patrick Sawyer – Patient Zero.

“For the greater public good.” — Adadevoh

Despite, like other doctors in Nigeria, never having come across Ebola before, Dr. Adadevoh suspected Patient Zero had the virus. She contacted the Lagos State and Federal Ministries of Health and had the patient tested. As she awaited the results of the test, she refused to release him, despite pressure from Liberian government officials (Patient Zero was a citizen of Liberia). Dr. Adadevoh’s swift response to Patient Zero resulted in the Nigerian government mobilizing resources needed to tackle the outbreak. Dr. Adadevoh saved Nigeria in more ways than can be imagined. Lagos, with a population of over 20 million people, would have suffered greatly. All in all, there were 20 Ebola cases in Nigeria, 11 of which were healthcare workers. 5 of the healthcare workers died, including Dr. Adadevoh, who will forever be remembered as a national hero.
