In most markets, it lags behind Spotify, Apple Music, Pandora, Deezer, and others. In Nigeria, it lags behind those other streaming sites as well as Audiomack and Boomplay Music. It is probably that relatively slow growth that seen Alphabet pull the plug on that adventure and back YouTube Music instead as the flagship music platform in the conglomerate. YouTube Music is YouTube’s and now Google’s answer to Apple Music. The platform was launched in 2015 and it is part of YouTube’s impressive catalogue. Since launching in 2004, YouTube has now grown to be the go-to source for open source video content on the internet.

With billions of user, many of whom double as creators too, the video streaming giant has dwarfed every other competitor including Vimeo. In recent years it has launched YouTube Red, YouTube for Kids and YouTube Premium which is their own answer to Netflix in the subscription video-on-demand section of internet video. YouTube Music may yet be a success where other offerings from Google failed on the fact that Google has made transition easy and they are targeting emerging markets like Nigeria too, unlike their competition. I am sceptical as to how that would pan out because Nigerians, in my experience, do not like to pay for things like this. Then again, we can look forward to greater prospects especially for our content creators who seem to be having more options open to them. Featured Image Source: The Verge
