  Our topic for today concerns a vital organ for respiration, the lungs. They are located in the thorax, on either side of the mediastinum. Their function is to oxygenate the blood. They get rid of C02 gas when we breathe out. They also change the pH of the blood and filter out small gas bubbles that may occur in the bloodstream.

Now, anything that threatens the lungs threatens life. So, even though we cannot see them, we need to take care of them as best we can so that they will continue to serve us well. One way to do this is to eat foods that are lungs friendly. Some of those foods are: Apples: Seeing this food on the list should convince you that there is a sense in the saying, an apple a day keeps the doctor away. Research indicates that a high intake of vitamin C, E and beta carotene aid good lung function; these vitamins and provitamin are all present in apples. So, enjoy an apple. It’ll help your lungs to function well and it will reduce your risk of developing asthma or lung cancer. Onions: Did you know that this vegetable which you use in almost all your cooking has medicinal properties? Yes oh! Onions are used in traditional medicine for the treatment of bronchitis, colds, influenza. When you eat onions, their anti-inflammatory properties boost lung health and its functions. Water: Even though a significant percentage of the human body is made up of water, water remains a crucial need for human survival. Dry lungs are prone to irritation and increased inflammation. Thus, they can benefit from the purifying properties of water. Hope you can now see that the water you drink is utilized in different parts of your body for different purposes. So, drink water. Health experts recommend at least eight glasses of water. If you can drink more than that, please do so. It keeps your lungs and the rest of you hydrated.

Fish: This is another good source of omega 3 fatty acid which is good for patients with chronic lung diseases. Fish has anti-inflammatory properties that decrease the inflammation of the lungs in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients. Also, fish oil protects the lungs from infection by a bacterium called Haemophilus influenza. Walnut: This single-seeded stone fruit has an earthy taste, most people who eat it acquire the taste for it. But walnut is rich in omega 3 fatty acid which can help to control inflammation of the lungs. Studies even indicate that as little as a handful can help fight asthma and other respiratory ailments. Citrus Fruits: Orange and lemon are rich in vitamin C which helps to boost immunity. Vitamin  C also optimizes lungs function; it helps to fight respiratory infection. Ginger: This herb in your kitchen can actually work wonders for your lungs. It has anti-inflammatory properties. It is used in relieving congestion, unclogging air passages and improving circulation to the lungs. These promote lung health.
