Gombe State used to be an emirate under the Sokoto Caliphate in the pre-Nigeria era and part of the Bauch post-independence. Though Fulani is the most predominant language spoken in Gombe, other languages and tribes coexist here. Such as Tera, Bolewa, Kanuri, Hausa and Tangale. Gombe has produced some notable people, like the novelist Helon Habila, minister of communication Isa Ali Patanmi, former minister of environment in Nigeria, and UN Deputy Secretary-General, Ms. Amina Mohamed amongst others. This airport, formerly known as Sani Abacha International Airport, is operational for both domestic and international flights. This airport terminal is well maintained. The asphalt runway road is well-lit to allow night commercial activities for nighttime arrivals or departures. It is good for sightseeing, especially when compared to other airports. While this site might look like nothing fancy, it is a historical location.
