Have you ever been in a situation where you just had to compromise and drop your ego to save a relationship? Yes, we have all been in these situations at one point or the other. The difference is that some of us only get into these situations once in a while. Egoistic people are usually almost always in a situation where they have to apologize or retreat, but the pride will not allow them. Today, these are the kind of people we are trying to help by suggesting ways through which one can manage ego and ensure that it does not keep affecting your relationships with people.
Is it ego or just self-worth? First of all, we need to determine whether that ego is actually big or you just have a high sense of self-worth. Having a high sense of self-worth is actually healthy, boosting your self-esteem and confidence. Also, it puts you in a position where you know you will not tolerate any disrespect or dishonor being thrown at you. But having an ego means you do not compromise or apologize even when you are wrong and at fault. This is what you have to deal with.
Determine whether it is worth it. There are some situations in which you just have to put your feet down to avoid being taken for granted. However, in situations where you have to admit your fault to save the relationship, it is worth it. You need to determine which relationships matter enough for you to drop your ego to make it work.
Assess yourself. Be your own judge, do people around you complain that you have no regard for others’ feelings aside from yourself? This might be because you have a giant ego that just will not come down and you do not care who gets hurt because of it. Dealing with your ego involves having a clear idea of how it is affecting close relationships with family and friends and then trying to cut it down on your own.
Be humble. What shall ego profit a man? Have it in mind that human relationships are important and it is not always beneficial to throw friends away just because you cannot compromise on little things and apologize when you are wrong. The main reason we have friends and family is companionship, you never can tell when you will need their help. So, if it is your ego that is pushing people away from you, it is time to cut it down a little.
