“Greatness is reserved for men that fulfil purpose.” – Fela Durotoye
Every economy is driven by enterprises and the people who run them. In fact, the success of an enterprise is largely determined by the effectiveness of its employees and, in turn, the success of the economy. However, research has shown that over 90% of employees are unhappy at their places of work. Now this raises concern, because how can an enterprise grow when its employees are unhappy at their jobs? And how can an economy grow with failing enterprises?
CareerShift seeks to address this problem. This event seeks to help Nigerians, and Nigeria, achieve greatness by charging its people to step out of their jobs and advance into their career.
Having a Job Vs. Having a Career
Fela Durotoye spelled out the difference between having a job and having a career at Day 1 of the Career Shift. According to him, a job is what you do to keep body and soul together, while a career is what you do in line with your purpose. A job is about receiving a pay check, and a career is about making a contribution to your society, doing what you love to do.
Moving Up in Your Career
He also taught how one could transition from a job to a career and moving upward (making progress) in that chosen career. The key to moving upward is value. Adding more value to your organization than is required of you will surely promote you.
There are 4 levels of service in every enterprise: Official, Managerial, Executive and, Directorial.
Each level has its set of skills. For an officer to move up to become a manager, he must not only function as an officer, but begin to think and function as a manager.
