Bernard Kalu studied Computer Engineering at Enugu State University of Science and Technology and is presently a documentary photographer with Auxano Photography.
CN: What were you doing prior to this?
I started photography fresh after school. I did some office work at NLNG during my IT in school days; I think that was when I knew 9-5 wasn’t really for me. I thank God that decision is panning out well. God is faithful.
CN: Do you have any formal training in photography?
In the beginning, I was internet bred. But months into it, I was privileged to attend a few workshops. The one with Kele Akaniro stood out because it fueled more passion for the art in me.
CN: Why did you decide to focus on the documentary photography niche?
I believe it’s best to focus on what resonates with your soul. Storytelling is what fanned my love for visual arts, with a mix of the memory of my childhood days. So it was just the right choice for me. Besides I do weddings as well (@auxanofotografy), I always say weddings are the ultimate documentary.
CN: What do you enjoy most about your work?
The idea of creating visual representations of people’s feelings, experiences and realities. It’s joy unparalleled for me. I guess it’s safe to say I enjoy the result of my work the most.
CN: What do you like least about it?
It’s the ill orientation of some about it. Some people prove difficult when you try telling their story or doing your work around them. They fail to realise that if no one saves moments of today, the future will be full of just blurred memories. I do a lot of street photography, and always there are those that get terrified about having their photo taken by a ‘stranger’. Even after I try to give insight as to why, some still fight it. It’s fine anyway, it comes with the work.
CN: Who are your professional role models?
Kanayo Adibe, Tom Saater, Segun Olotu, Jide Alakija, Victor Lax, amongst others.

CN: What advice do you wish you had received as an undergraduate?
Hmmm… It’ll be to build on my innate abilities. Learn about business. Choose a craft and focus on its development. Success is usually something you call ordinary within or around- waiting for you to make it happen. Most importantly, grow your relationship with God. There is no life outside Him.
CN: If there were any other careers that you would choose, what would it be?
Can’t think of any at the moment. Hooked to photography. 🙂
