Your appearance says a whole lot about you. It’s a Non Verbal Communication. Until you appear, no one knows you exist. Books may not be judged by their cover, they’re mostly judge by their contents, but absolutely not the same with your looks. Your appearance cannot be compromised, particularly in our ever increasingly complicated and sophisticated society. Truly a lot could be assumed by those who see you based on how you look.
It’s quite true that first appearance can be very deceptive but people can substantially discern your content by your looks. In Nigeria of today, marketers of products spend twice, and sometimes thrice the amount of a product in its packaging and advertising. They believe that what the buyer sees about the design, color and style of packaging says a lot about the content to them.
People are usually addressed by the way they dress. How well you are treated and received to a large extent depends on your appearance. I never forgot an incident with a friend. This friend had insisted on following me to a function where 2 ministers of the Federal Republic were to give speeches. I was so cutely suited up, while he wore a jean and T shirt. In an attempt for him not to feel embarrassed, I didn’t talk about it. At the event’s entry point, I was admitted and he, following me behind, was turned back. The next time I saw him, he was full of regrets. Your appearance should suit the environment you wish to appear in. You cannot dress like a pauper and end up in the palace. Even the prisoner – Joseph in the holy book, cleaned up once an invitation to appear before the king was extended to him. Being neat and tidy clearly expresses that you have your acts together, while looking disheveled automatically tags you with all sorts of negative traits. Looking smart and clean non verbally says you respect yourself and wish to be respected too.
You don’t have to be wearing a designer label to be accepted, or aspire to be a super model to be liked. It’s really not in the design or label but in the combination and in the proper mix.
Why do we like to dress well for a job interview without paying same attention to details when found elsewhere? Something whispers to us, “it doesn’t matter”. Truth is, it does matter.
Looking good is an art that needs to be cultivated to remain relevant. It’s all a matter of neatness and proper grooming. Let yours not be compromised.
