Anyone who has ever worked with me will tell you one thing: Enn_Mae sure can dress. I have consciously over the years made it a habit to love the work I do and to do only the work I love, so it’s easier for me to wake up and dress the way I feel every day to work (which of course is happy), and with a dose of Brandy and Leona Lewis playing on my iPod, I’m definitely good to go. Have you ever gotten to work on a Monday morning and seen some of your colleagues looking jaw-dropping gorgeous while some others just appear “there”? If you have unfortunately constantly found yourself in the “there” section, you are in luck because this article is for you. Spicing up your wardrobe doesn’t have to break the bank; it really is about being creative and having the ability to accessorize well and right.
ACCESSORIES ARE KEY: I bet you can’t count how many times you’ve heard this, but it is actually true. You will marvel at what a single piece of accessory can do to a somewhat drab looking gown. The wonderful thing is that you don’t really have to be too dressy when you’ve got a gorgeous piece of jewelry dangling from your neck. So consider investing in neck pieces ranging from little to huge volumes, they will always come in handy at various times.
TAKE STOCK OF WHAT YOU HAVE: I found out that a lot of us are guilty of not maximizing what we already have. A lot of people unconsciously stick to wearing a particular set of clothes week in, week out. Take time out on a particular weekend, invite a couple of friends over if they are available and then throw your whole wardrobe on the floor. Select and gather identical colours together, remove and give away those that don’t fit anymore. Then ask your friends to help you randomly pair those clothes. You will be surprised what you would come up with at the end of the day.
INVEST IN BLAZERS: I remember a male colleague asking me recently just how many blazers I own and where I get them from (of course I didn’t tell him, that’s trade secret mehnn *smiles*). But blazers are a must-have in your wardrobe, because not only do they give you an aura of elegance but they are also chic. Blazers are a wardrobe staple, not just for the workplace but for your personal style as well and believe me not only will they spice up your work wardrobe, they will also quickly become one of your favourite go-to items!
BUTTONS: You can visit a local craft store closest to you and shop for new and fun buttons, then swap them on your office shirts and jackets. It seems like a small change and costs a little cash, but believe me it has the power to completely overhaul your look the next time you decide to wear those shirts to work.
ORGANISE YOUR WARDROBE: Nothing throws you off balance on a Monday morning like an upside down, overflowing wardrobe. This is one of the culprits responsible for your choosing just about anything to wear to work, since you would always just settle for the most visible one in the gigantic pile. Take time to organise your wardrobe, ask siblings or friends for help over a weekend, and make it fun by painting each other’s nails and have some cool fruit juice when you are done arranging. And do not forget to give out clothes that are either too small, and those you do not wish to wear any longer. It is better to have a cleaner wardrobe with fewer clothes than an overflowing wardrobe with millions of clothes that take forever to find.
EMBRACE COLOURS: Sometimes it’s not the clothes that are faulty but its colours. Growing up, I discovered that I just veered towards primary colours because I felt they were safe and require little to no hassle wearing. But as I grew and began to embrace quite a lot of things that intrigued me I realized how boring my wardrobe actually was. That was when I gradually began to shop colours that I naturally wouldn’t get close to at the mall. Doing this can be quite challenging and sometimes cumbersome, but take your time in picking and selecting those that appeal to you and with time you will be a pro at it. These changes are simple, but with cheetah print flats, a lovely leather belt, and a bold red dress shirt, it’s an easy way to spice up your work wardrobe.
The best thing to remember when it comes to your work wardrobe is that you can have fun with it! Don’t feel restrained by the dress code. Be appropriately dressed but put your own spin on it. Find something that works for you and makes you feel the most you that you possibly can, within reason of course!
