Millions of yoga enthusiasts across the world bent and twisted their bodies in complex postures on Sunday, 21st June, 2015 to mark the first International Yoga Day. Why?
To improve their physical and mental state.
The origins of Yoga have been speculated to date back to pre-Vedic Indian traditions, but most likely developed around the sixth and fifth centuries BCE, in ancient India’sascetic circles.
Yoga gurus from India later introduced yoga to the west, following the success of Swami Vivekananda in the late 19th and early 20th century. In the 1980s, yoga became popular as a system of physical exercise across the Western world.
Many studies have tried to determine the effectiveness of yoga as a complementary intervention for cancer, schizophrenia, asthma, and heart disease. The results of these studieshave suggested that yoga may reduce risk factors and aid in a patient’s psychological healing process. Besides these diseases, yoga plays a role in improving general well being.
Did you know that yoga is also beneficial to your sex life? Yes it is.
According to research in The Journal of Sexual Medicine, married women who took up yoga and practiced mindfulness techniques reported higher levels of arousal and desire, and better orgasms. To reap similar benefits and increase intimacy with your spouse, perform the 5 poses below at least three times this week, spending a minute or two in each position:
1. Wide-Legged Straddle Pose (Upavistha Konasana)
It improves blood flow to the pelvic area, increasing energy and vitality as research has shown that below-the-belt circulation is directly linked to arousal.
2. Shoulder Stand (Salamba Sarvangasana)
This pose works on many woes that can plague a healthy sex life: fatigue, depression and anxiety as well as digestive problems.
3. Goddess Pose (Supta Baddha Konasana)
This simple pose can help alleviate PMS and menopause and it promotes healthy function of the reproductive organs. It will also help you get comfortable with being vulnerable, allowing you to develop true intimacy with your spouse.
4. Bridge Pose (Setu Bandha Sarvangasana)Exercises that strengthen the pelvic floor muscles, like Kegels, were invented to help treat urinary incontinence, but it was discovered that they have other benefits as well; they tone the vagina muscles and improve orgasms. According to yoga experts, the bridge pose is similar to doing a Kegel, because you squeeze those same pelvic muscles.
5. Eagle Pose (Garudasana)
In this pose, you wrap one leg around the other like a rope. When you release, all the blood rushes through the cervix, which is great for arousal and orgasm.
