5 Ways To Cultivate A Winning Mindset

Developing a “winning” mindset is about being deliberate with your choices and knowing when to say YES to others’ requests and when to say NO because you need to focus on your own goals and ambitions. Another challenge is determining who you spend time with.

It is a winning mindset that gives you the hope to push on in the face of seeming despair, the grit to press on in the face of seeming weaknesses, and the courage to continue in the face of discouragement. Top-flight leaders have a winning mindset. In his book, Talent is Overrated: What Really Separates World-Class Performers From Everybody Else, author Geoff Colvin says, “The best performers set goals that are not about the outcome but about the process of reaching the outcome.” In this article, I’m going to highlight five ways you can develop a winning mindset.
  1. Don’t Rely On Your Talent

People with a winning mindset understand that everyone has a talent or is talented in one thing or the other. However, these people with a winning mindset would rather develop their craft, transform it into a career or a business rather than simply believe that their talent is enough. Relying on your gifts or talents alone be deceptive. Little wonder a wise man once said, “hard work beats talent when talent refuses to work.”
  1. Develop Your Staying Power

Staying power is a combination of grit, focus, perseverance, and passion. People with a winning mindset know full well that their potentials can be actualised if only they will remain driven, passionate and focused on what they want to achieve. It’s grits that precede good performance, not luck. People with a winning mindset don’t rely on luck, they follow the process.

  1. Believe In Your Vision

People with a winning mindset trust their vision. They know they aren’t wasting their time doing the wrong thing. They know that their vision is worth the while. Because they believe in the beauty of their vision, they press on to achieve it against all odds, against all mockery and external distraction. They remain optimistic regardless of successive failures. An example of a winning mindset is Thomas Edison who invented the lightbulb after a thousand unsuccessful attempts. He stuck to the vision because he believed it was possible. To develop a winning mindset ask yourself if your vision is worth your time and effort.
  1. Start Small With Great Positivity

People with a winning mindset start small and build up a great edifice of greatness. They start urgently rather than procrastinate. Every step they take, no matter how small, they do take a great sense of duty. People with a winners’ mindset do not trivialise every step they take. They achieve great things with baby steps. Therefore, if you want to have a winning mindset, dream big, start small. Take each step deliberately and you will arrive at your dream destination.
  1. Take Action

People with a winning mindset are action takers. Rather than spend their time explaining away, they take action. They start small, they start today. They might not start building a gigantic corporation right away, but they start by knowing how much it will cost to build one, consult the right people, select the small team of confident and thoughtful people, draft their strategies and put their businesses out there for everyone to see.
