World Cup Playoffs: Nigeria Trumps Ethiopia 2-1

Super Eagles of Nigeria rallied to a 2-1 victory over the Walya Antelopes of Ethiopia in the first leg of their World Cup play-off. The reigning African champions came from a goal down to record a much-needed victory at Addis Ababa. The Ethiopians took the game to the Super Eagles in the first half, dominating and outclassing their opponents and were rewarded with the opening goal in the 56th minute through Vincent Enyeama’s error. The Super Eagles keeper who had been in fine form throughout the game, misjudged a cross from Behailu Assefa to the delight of the Ethiopians fans in the packed stadium. Bullish striker, Emmanuel Emenike made the difference with a brace to send the Nigerian fans into raptures. His first goal was a tremendous strike from yards out to mark his comeback to the Super Eagles fold after 67minutes. He converted his second goal from the spot after he was dragged down by Aynalem Hailu in the 90th minute. The win gives Nigeria the advantage going into the second leg on November 16 in Calabar. A draw or win will see the Super Eagles secure their fifth appearance at the biggest football event in the World. A turn-around from the Ethiopians will guarantee their first ever participation in the World Cup.   Other World Cup Play-off results: Burkina Faso 3-2 Algeria Ivory Coast 3-1 Senegal Tunisia 0-0 Cameroon Ghana v Egypt will be played on Tuesday.
