The closing ceremony of the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Games was a very emotional one for participants, especially the Nigerian team who despite winning no medals and coming just within an inch of making history as the first Africans to win a medal at the winter olympics, however still made Olympic history as the first Africans to participate in Bobsled, while Simidele Adeagbo became the first Nigerian woman to participate in Skeleton.
The amazing trio made up of Seun Adigun, Akuoma Omeoga and Ngozi Onwumere have done more than impact and inspire Nigerians to go for gold despite the hurdles on the way.
Unlike many competitors, the Nigerian team had to indulge in personal training programs to prepare for the competition while teams with proper government-backed training regimes had standard training programs with proper coaching.
The fact that the African continent is not a snowy or icy terrain is the most obvious reason why most interested persons in the sport have had their dreams cut short before seeing the light of day. This is also why there is more support for the game in the diaspora than from within the continent. While most, if not all African participants in the game are either born or raised outside Africa. This was proved in the just concluded Winter Games.
PyeongChang and the world will not forget them in a very long time, and Nigerians are extremely proud of their accomplishments regardless.
Congratulations on making history girls!!
