Nigerian national women’s U-17 football team, the Flamingoes, qualified for the 2022 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup slated to hold in India from October 11-30, 2022. The Flamingoes were held to a goalless draw by Ethiopia at the MKO Abiola Stadium on Saturday, June 4, 2022, to qualify 1-0 on aggregate. Nigeria recorded a total of 15 goals throughout the qualifiers and conceded none in a run of six games without defeat.
Sprinter Tobi Amusan remained impressive at the Irena Szewinska Memorial in Poland. Amusan clocked a time of 12.80s(0.2) in the final of the women’s 100m Hurdle to finish second behind Tia Jones (12.79s). In the men’s 100m, Raymond Ekevwo finished third with a time of 10.19s (-0.2) behind Jeremiah Azu (10.18s) in second place and Elijah Hall with a Personal Best (PB) of 10.02s in the first place.
In the Nigeria Professional Football League, Rivers United remained top of the log despite suffering a 1-0 away defeat at the hands of Wikki Tourists. A 14th-minute strike from Manu Garba was all Wikki needed to gain all three points against the Stanley Eguma-led side.
In Jos, Plateau United recorded a 1-0 home win against Kano Pillars to remain in second place and close the points gap against Rivers United from 10 to 7 points.
