Weekend Sports RoundUp: Amusan Sets New African Record

Nigerian sprinter Tobilola Amusan has set a new African record in the women’s 100m event. Amusan broke the previous African record which she set by running a new 12.41 seconds in the 100m women’s hurdle event at the Diamond League meet in Paris, France on Saturday, June 18, 2022.

Amusan’s victory on Saturday moved her to third in the world this year (2022) behind Puerto Rico’s Jasmine Camacho-Quinn in the first place (12.37s) and United State’sAlaysha Johnson in second place (12.40s).

Rivers United’s chances of winning the 2021/2022 Nigeria Professional Football League season received a major boost after the Stanley Eguma-led side played out a goalless away draw against Enugu Rangers on Saturday, June 18, 2022.

The draw meant Rivers maintained their ten points lead in the league table following Plateau United’s 1-1 draw at home against Gombe United on Sunday, June 19, 2022. Andrew Ikefe gifted the home side the lead in the 60th minute, but it only took Gombe United ten minutes to equalize through an Ibrahim Yahaya strike. A late penalty for Plateau United was not enough as the Gombe United goalkeeper stopped the ball from reaching the back of the net.

Rivers United now needs just three points in the remaining four games to be crowned league champions for the first time in their history.
