The Super Eagles of Nigeria were on a record-smashing spree over the weekend. After travelling by water for the first time in 71 years (the Eagles had a boat trip to Benin Republic for their AFCON qualifiers match against the Squirrels of Benin) and also ending the Beninoise’ eight-year unbeaten home streak after red-hot striker, Paul Onuachu, gifted Nigeria the lead in the 93rd minute of the encounter to seal all three points.

Nigeria has qualified for the 2022 Africa Cup of Nations set to hold in Cameroun. In athletics, Nigerian sprint queen, Blessing Okagbare, opened her track and field outdoor campaign on a high note after setting a personal best in the 400m (she hardly runs 400m races) at the Florida International ‘’Pro Addition’’ meeting which was held at the Ansin Sports Complex, Florida on Saturday, March 27, 2021. Okagbare ran a time of 53.21 seconds to finish second and beat the 53.34 seconds time she set at the Mt. SAC Relays in Walnut, California, six years ago. Nigerians are hopeful that Okagbare will have a successful campaign at the Tokyo Olympics this summer as she is having a great year so far. Nigerian basketball sensation, Jordan Nwora, had an impressive first start in the NBA for the Milwaukee Bucks. Despite losing 96-102 points to the New York Knicks on Sunday, March 28, 2021, the Nigerian was outstanding with a total of 21 points, 10 rebounds, and 2 assists. Nwora’s form is encouraging as Nigeria look towards having a successful Olympics outing in basketball.

Over the weekend, the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), shifted the attention of Nigerians a little away from the Super Eagles with very interesting matches. Kwara United remained top of the league table after recording a vital 2-1 away win against Katsina United on Sunday, March 28. Afeez Nosiru gifted the visitors the lead in the 5th minute of the encounter, but a 30th-minute strike from Josepe Junior Atule cancelled out the opener. Kwara United would have to press until the late minutes of the game to get a second goal from Michael Ohanu. The highest-scoring game of the weekend saw Nassarawa United record a vital 5-3 home win against Abia Warriors at the Lafia Stadium. A hattrick from Silas Nwankwo and solo efforts from Ikenna Offor, and Chinedu Ohanachom, were all the Lafia-based side needed to gain all three points despite a brace from Fatai Abdullahi and a goal from Godwin Obaje for the visitors.
