Nigerian national U-17 men’s football team has qualified for the 2023 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations slated to hold in Algeria. The NdukaUgbadeled side came from behind to beat the U-17 national team of Ivory Coast 3-1 in the first semi-final game of the ongoing WAFU B U-17 tournament at the Cape Coast Stadium, Ghana.

The Ivoirians had taken the lead just two minutes into the game through a penalty converted by Yan Diomandi. A man-of-the-match performance saw Nigeria’s Emmanuel Michael score two brilliant free-kick to equalize the goal and gift the five-time world champions the lead before a second-half header from Abdullahi Idris all but sealed the victory and the 2023 U-17 AFCON ticket. Despite achieving the aim of qualifying for next year’s AFCON, Nigeria will look towards winning the tournament on Friday, June 24, 2022, when they confront Burkina Faso who beat Ghana 1-0 in the second semi-final of the competition.

A 64th-minute penalty converted by Burkina Faso’s OusamaneCamara meant they booked a date with Ugbade’s boys in the final game of the regional showpiece.

Nigeria and Burkina Faso will be playing for pride when they meet on Friday as both teams have booked their ticket for the 2023 AFCON in Algeria. The top four teams in the 2023 AFCON will make it to the 2023 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Peru.
