Nigerian-American two-time Emmy winning actress, Uzo Aduba, is on her way to winning some more accolades with her role in the new Netflix film, “Beats”.

Aduba plays the very protective mother of a teenage music prodigy, starring alongside Anthony Anderson, Khalil Everage, Emayatzy Corinealdi, Paul Walter Hauser, Dave East, Ashley Jackson, and Evan J. Simpson.

The coming of age film follows a teenage hip hop prodigy, and a former music manager turned security man, who tries to prod him out of his shell, and get him to explore his talent. Together they right their past ill experiences and gain fame. The teenager is played by Khalil Everage, who already has two movies out in 2019, while Anthony Anderson, the lead act in “Blackish”, plays his manager.

Uzo Aduba is best known an “Orange Is The New Black” actress. She won Emmy Awards for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series in 2014, Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series in 2015, and five Screen Actors Guild Awards between 2015 and 2017 for her role as Suzanne “Crazy Eyes” Warren in the Netflix original series. She was initially rejected at the audition for “Orange Is the New Black”, but was later offered a different role, which would eventually earn her the awards mentioned above.

Aduba will be playing Shirley Chisholm – the American civil rights activist who ran for president – in the upcoming TV series “Mrs America”, starting on FX in 2020.

“Beats” will be up on Netflix on the 19th of June 2019.
