Training of Nigerian Astronauts May Commence By 2015, Science Minister Says

Space travel for Nigerian astronauts may be closer than many think, after the words of the Minister for Science, Professor Ita Ewa, during a recap of his achievements in the last two years as head of the ministry. He disclosed that a rocket launch site with a 20-kilometre launch capability had been set up in Epe, Lagos, and that that 12 engineers from the National Space Research and Development Agency (NARSDA) are in China for space-related training.
He said his ministry awaits the approval of the Presidency to go ahead with training of Nigerians to become astronauts, which is likely to commence in 2015 and there is a plan for partnership with China to build a space rocket.
He disclosed that as soon as the president approves the plan, Nigeria will also launch two more communication satellites. He said advantages of robust space science include security surveillance, flood management, environmental surveillance for pest and diseases infested areas, desertification and pollution.
