Oborodudu’s victory now assures Nigeria of a medal in Tokyo as she has equally made history as the first Nigerian to win an Olympic medal in wrestling. In her semi-final fight against Mongolia’s Battsetseg Soronzonbold, Oborodudu won by 7-2 to the cheer of Nigerian fans in Tokyo and every part of the globe. Oborodudu’s feat is a perfect way to bring an end to Nigeria’s woes in the 2020 Olympics which has seen several Nigerian athletes disqualified and a string of poor results.

Wrestling, a largely neglected sport in Nigeria has turned out to be the country’s saving grace in Tokyo, ending initial fears of Nigeria not winning a single medal. Administrators must look into wrestling to ensure that Nigeria’s dominance in the sport outlives Tokyo 2020. Attention now shifts to Oborodudu’s GOLD medal match against USA’s Stock Mensah. Nigeria has secured its first medal, however, a gold medal would be the icing on the cake. Tomorrow at 10.15 am, Nigerian time, we watch in anticipation.
