Virtually everyone is talking about Facebook’s upcoming Dislike Button after news of its launch broke out on Tuesday.
Founder, Mark Zuckerberg, had this to say at a public Q&A session: “I think people have asked about the dislike button for many years. Today is a special day because today is the day I can say we’re working on it and shipping it,” as cited in The Guardian UK.
Now, here’s what is interesting. On one hand, the button means people can reflect their true emotions about sad news stories like a death of a friend or celebrity that is posted on their timelines. This is fair enough considering the awkwardness of “liking” such content.
“What [people] really want is the ability to express empathy. Not every moment is a good moment,” Zuckerberg said in the same report by The Guardian UK.
On the other hand, it gives people license to blatantly dislike friends’ photos and videos, perhaps out of spite.
Think about it. Imagine sharing a seemingly “happy” post on Facebook. Maybe you recorded a rendition of one of your favourite songs, or poured out your heart in a beautiful artwork, only to return to 5 likes and 50 dislikes.
Be honest. How would you feel?
