The Caine Prize is named after Sir Michael Caine, a businessman and philanthropist who once chaired the ‘Africa 95’ festival in 1995, and the Booker Prize Management Committee. Following his death, the prize was established in his honour (in 2000) by his friends and colleagues.
Benefits
Participants in the Caine Prize Award for African Writing benefit from it in the following ways:- Winners receive a prize of ₤10,000
- The winner and shortlisted writers will receive travel grants to attend events in Africa, London, and elsewhere
- Top writers will have their works published in the Caine Prize anthology print

Eligibility
This competition is open to writers who meet these criteria:- Their story entry must have been published within the five years preceding the submission deadline (between 1st April 2019 and 25th March 2024)
- The entry must be more than 3,000 words and less than 10,000 words long
- Entries must be submitted by a publisher (e.g. publishers of physical and digital books, literary journals, magazines, and arts-oriented websites); self-published and unpublished works are not eligible
- Writers must be at least 18 years old at the time of the submission
- Submissions must specify what African country they are from, and their word count
- Publishers are expected to upload a ‘Publisher’s Letter’ with their submission. The letter will contain the name of the writer, title of the story/stories, word count of each story, the qualifying nationality of the writer, date of publication of the stories, and confirmation of the writer’s consent to the submission

Entries will remain open until March 31, 2024.
