Honey is sweet and loved by almost everyone. It is also an endearing word people call their spouses, kids, friends and loved ones. While honey sweetens foods and nourishes our bodies, it is also a natural ingredient with benefits that transcends ingestion. This ingredient has been known to be beneficial in our skin care regimen.

Honey can be pure and natural or refined -the type you find in superstores. When incorporating it in your skin care routine ensure it is pure. Natural honey is thick, dark and still possesses all the nutrients to perform wonders on your skin and hair.

Fights acne and fades blackspots

Honey is a cleansing agent that removes skin impurities. It soothes and heals your skin. Since it is a natural moisturizer, it also aids the treatment of scars. Apply on the affected area, leave it for a few minutes and rinse off with warm water.

Helps treat wrinkles

Honey possesses antioxidants that delay ageing. It leaves our skin looking young and wrinkle-free. Honey moisturizes the top layer of our skin which helps keep wrinkles at bay.

Softens cracked lips

This a common problem during the harmattan season. Our lips get dry and chapped. For the benefit of those whose lips are still dry even after the harmattan period, honey can work wonders for your lips. Applying a little amount of honey on your lips and leaving it overnight will leave them smooth and supple. We know honey is sweet, so avoid the temptation of licking it off your lips for desired results.

Treats dry skin

One of the greatest benefits of honey is moisture and that’s what dry and flaky skin needs for soothing relief. Spread honey on your skin and leave in for few minutes, then rinse off with warm water. Do this two to three times a week.

Cleanses the skin

Honey helps remove dirt and grime from the skin, without stripping the natural oils. It exfoliates the skin and rids it of dead cells. Dirt on the skin leaves the pores clogged, that may lead to acne and other skin impurities. These skin impurities can leave the skin dull and dark. The use of honey as an exfoliant will unclog those pores, rid the skin of impurities and brighten the skin, giving it that glow we all love and want.

Strengthens hair and promotes growth

This is a personal favourite in my hair care routine. If your hair breaks and doesn’t grow properly, mix honey with other natural ingredients, like egg whites and avocado and apply the mixture to your hair. Cover it with a shower cap and leave for an hour or more before rinsing off with warm water.

Controls dandruff

We all dread the constant itch caused by dandruff. To help control this, mix honey with water and apply the solution to your scalp. Leave it on for about an hour then rinse off with warm water.

One important thing you must note is consistency. While you may see changes immediately, for greater results you have to use this over a period of time.
