BET has announced the nominees for the 2019 edition of the BET Awards, and this year three Nigerians made the list. Bruna Boy, Mr Eazi and Teni were nominated in the two Best International Act categories, alongside other artistes from the UK, France and South Africa.
Teni, whose country of origin was simply captured as “Africa” on the BET website is in the Viewers’ Choice: Best New International Act category along with two artistes each from the UK and France, and the South African singer Sho Madjozi, also only captured as African. Burna Boy and Mr Eazi are in the Best International Act category with two other acts from the UK, two from France, and one more from “Africa”.
In 2018, Nigeria’s Davido emerged Best International Act from the award category that included fellow Nigerian Tiwa Savage, as well as J Hus (UK), Fally Ipupa (DR Congo), Cassper Nyovest (South Africa) and 7 others.
The BET Awards were established by the Black Entertainment Television (BET) network in 2001, to celebrate outstanding African Americans, and other American minorities in entertainment. The Best International Act Award category was first introduced in 2010 and was split into Best International Act Award: UK and Best International Act Award: Africa in 2011. The two categories were merged again in 2018, and this year, 2019, the Viewers’ Choice: Best New International Act Award has been introduced.
The 19th edition of The BET Awards is scheduled to hold on Sunday, 23rd June 2019,at the Microsoft Theatre in Los Angeles and will be broadcast live on BET.
