This feat means Temitope Adeshina has set a new record in the history of women’s high jump in Nigeria and will represent Nigeria at the 2024 Olympics. The first female athlete to represent Nigeria in the high jump event since Doreen Amata at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. The Nigerian achieved this remarkable feat in her last attempt to place third based on countbacks behind Rose Yeboah and Elena Kulichenko, who finished first on the same mark of 1.97m. Achieving this meant that Adeshina scaled a National Record (NR), Meeting Record (MR), and Personal Best (PB). After scaling over the 1.97m height, Adeshina attempted to scale the 2.00m but was unsuccessful.

Nigeria’s minister of sport, John Enoh, has congratulated Adeshina for making the country proud.
“Temitope Adeshina, congratulations on becoming the first female athlete from Nigeria to reach 1.97 meters! You will be the first sportsperson to represent Nigeria in the high jump at the Olympics since 2016. We’re happy for you,”the minister said on X.
