Team Nigeria Wins 13 Medals As Folashade And Chiemerie Break World Records

Nigeria occupies the 8th spot on the medals table.

Nigeria’s medal haul in the ongoing 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, United Kingdom, increased to 13 on Thursday, August 4, 2022, after Team Nigeria added four medals. Three out of the four medals were won in Para Powerlifting while one medal came from Women’s Discus Throw. With four days left until the Commonwealth Games are over, Nigeria has also greatly progressed in boxing, athletics, and table tennis.

Para Powerlifting duo of Folashade Oluwafemiayo and Bose Omolayo were dominant in the global showpiece, helping Nigeria win Gold and Silver in women’s Heavyweight Powerlifting. A cumulative point of 123.4 after lifting a series of 130kg, 150kg, and 155kg to break the World Record set by her, saw Folashade win Gold for Nigeria. Omolayo finished second with a total of 115.2 points after lifting 145kg. The men’s Heavyweight Powerlifting would also see Nigeria win another medal after IkechukwuObichukwu lifted 190kg to win Silver.

In the women’s discus throw F42-44/61-64, Goodness Chiemerie broke the World Record numerous times to clinch Gold. Chiemerie threw 36.56m to become Commonwealth Champion and World Record, holder.

After failing to win a medal in the women’s 100m final as Rosemary Chukwuma and Grace Nwokocha placed 4th and 5th, FavourOfili gave Nigerians some hope after winning heat 4 of the women’s 200m heats event in a time of 22.71s. The trio of IfeanyiOjeli (21.12s), UdodiOnwuzurike (21.18s) and AlabaAkintola (21.28s) all booked their place in the semi-final of the men’s 200m heats.

Team Nigeria was guaranteed two additional medals from boxing after the duo of Elizabeth Oshoba and Cynthia Ogunsemilore won their quarterfinal fights on Thursday, August 4.

So far, Nigeria has won 5 Gold, 3 Silver, and 5 Bronze medals at the global event.
