How to Obtain a TIN in Nigeria
Now that you understand the importance of the Tax Identification Number (TIN), the next step is knowing how to get one. The process is relatively simple and can be done online or in person.For Individuals
- Visit the FIRS office closest to you or access the Joint Tax Board (JTB) TIN Registration System online.
- Fill out the required registration form, providing accurate personal details such as your full name, address, and other identification information (like your National Identification Number, Driver’s License, or International Passport).
- After submitting your application, you will be issued a Tax Identification Number.
For Businesses
- For businesses, as per CAC and FIRS collaboration, when you register your company with the Corporate Affairs Commission, a TIN is automatically generated for your business.
- If however, this was not done or missed by any chance, you can also apply directly with FIRS. All you need to do is provide your company’s CAC registration details and complete the TIN application form to be issued a TIN for your business.
What Happens if You Don’t Have a TIN?
If you don’t have a Tax Identification Number, several consequences may arise. First, you won’t be able to fulfil tax obligations, which can lead to penalties, fines, or even legal action from the FIRS.
