The chairman of the Federal Capital Territory Squash Association, Edem Selong, has said that the body is committed to revamping two abandoned Squash courts at the Old Parade Ground of the FCT, Abuja, in order to create requisite space for the training and development of squash talents in the country.
Selong, who was elected the chairman of the Squash Association last month, said his leadership has set plans in motion to promote the game of squash across states in Nigeria.
“It is imperative for the two squash courts, which incidentally, are the only two courts owned by the FCT, to be revitalized and put to use. So as to take care of the teeming crowd of squash players, who are daily wandering about the FCT looking for where to find a befitting court to play and keep themselves busy, and promote their health.
“We also want to use the facilities to groom our talents in the field of squash so as to raise a standard team for any competition so that we don’t need to be running heater skelter whoever we ned to present athletes for any competition.”
Speaking on the just concluded National Sports Festival in Abuja, Selong said the competition could have turned out even better, if necessary preparations had been made and implemented on time. He however, praised the efforts of the FCT minister, Mohammed Bello, and the FCT Sports Administration Department of the FCDA, for tasking up the responsibilities of hosting the festival after Cross River State failed to do so.
Selong, also commended the Minister for Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung, for ensuring that the 19th edition of the festival was a huge success.
