Social Media Week Lagos (SMW Lagos) team has received the invitation to participate in Social Media Week London (SMWLDN) later this month. They will hold a day of programming themed “Africa: Open & Connected” at the event.
SMWLDN and SMW Lagos are part of the larger Social Media Week Global Conference. SMW Lagos was held for the first time in Africa in February, 2013 in Lagos. The conference explores the social, cultural and economic impact of social media.
Ravensbourne will co-host the event with SMW Lagos. Topics to be discussed are, “1 Billion Strong… A Continent on The Rise,” “Open Access: Governance & Social Media in Africa,” and “E!Africa… How Social Media Is Driving Entertainment in Africa.”
“A connected Africa has huge implications for the world. During Social Media Week London we will look at how social media impacts and is being leveraged by a continent of over 1 billion people,” said Ngozi Odita, Founder of AFRIKA21 and Executive Director of SMW Lagos. “Social Media Week London brings together thought leaders from various industries, hence serving as an excellent platform to discuss the opportunities for collaboration and partnership across Africa’s dynamic tech, business and creative sectors.”
“We are hugely excited to bring SMW Lagos to London, we hope to deliver a great day of programming and also participate in the wider week and engage with the world. We look forward to representing Africa in London and invite all Africans who make London their home to come out and support this event. With Ravensbourne as our hosts, it’s commitment to innovation in digital media, we aim to create the perfect setting to engage Africa, which is increasingly social, digital and mobile,” said Obi Asika, Founder of Dragon Africa and Chairman of SMW Lagos.
“At Ravensbourne we see social media as a very exciting space, as a level playing field where our highly creative student population can develop, mix and share ideas with a global array of companies. We are immensely proud that Social Media Week Lagos selected Ravensbourne as the venue to showcase Nigerian innovation, the event will give our students and the UK tech community a unique insider’s view into one of the world’s fastest growing mobile and tech markets,” said Will Pearson, Director of Technology at Ravensbourne College of Design & Communications.
