By the time the on-going monorail system is completed and launched in October later this year, Rivers State will be the first state to have the rail transport system in Nigeria.
Monorail is a railway system consisting of a single rail, elevated and with the trains suspended from it.
Speaking with newsmen recently in Port Harcourt, the state government stated that the project, which has been subjected to politics, will be completed before the end of his tenure.
“Even if it is May 29, 2015, people will ride on the monorail. What is delaying the monorail is just the terminal where they will maintain it. That is what they are fixing now, once they fix that, it will be ready,” he stated.
Efforts to speak with the Rivers State Commissioner for Information, Mrs. Ibim Semenitari were not successful.
“I personally believe the governor means business as far as the project is concerned. And if you check, he has always said it; that he would not leave the project abandoned. That means it is a done deal. Now, we can confirm this because we can see the rail being put on track. That is commendable and we hope to ride on it soon,” a resident of old GRA, Port Harcourt was quoted in some section of the media.
