Rio 2016: Nigeria’s Dream Team VI Sweeps the Swedes Aside

Nigeria’s U-23 football team put its hectic start to its campaign at the Rio 2016 Olympics behind it to defeat their Swedish opponents 1-0 in their second group match at the games. The scoreline suggests a tight game, but the Nigerian team was more dominant of the two sides, as match statistics testify. With the victory, they have booked their place in the quarter-finals of the football event.

Sadiq Umar, the AS-Roma striker, made the difference with a header which gave Nigeria the lead in the 40th minute of the match. Sweden’s goalkeeper Andreas Linde was kept busy for most of the game, as the Nigerian attack, led by Oghenkaro Etebo, continued to ask questions of the Scandinavians. In the end, one goal was enough to sink the Swedes, and send the Nigerians into the quarter-finals of the football event, with a game to spare.

The final group match for Nigeria’s U-23 will be played on Tuesday, August 10; kickoff time for the game is 11 PM.
