Wearing the Super Eagles jersey to represent the Nigerian national team is something of pride, but being the country’s centre forward is totally a different ball game owing to the pressure and burden that comes with being responsible for goals that will bring joy to the faces of citizens of the most populous black nation on earth.
Rashidi Yekini was responsible for getting Nigeria goals for over a decade and did not fall short of expectations as he went on to become Nigeria highest goal scorer in history till date with 37 goals in 58 appearances. Today marks exactly eight years the gangling striker bid farewell to mother earth and the football world has been pouring in tributes for the football legend who scored Nigeria’s first FIFA World Cup goal and backed it up with one of the most iconic celebrations in the history of the tournament.

Rashidi is also third on the list of highest goal scorers in the history of the CAF Africa Cup Of Nations which he won with the Super Eagles in 1994. The 1993 African Footballer of the Year also represented Nigeria in two FIFA World Cup tournaments (1994 and 1998).
A club legend for Vitoria Setubal of Portugal where he had his first stint from 1990-1994, before returning for his second stint in 1997, Yekini equally made his mark in the Nigerian domestic league with Shooting Stars of Ibadan amongst others. He will always be remembered as one of Nigeria’s greats, RIP Rashidi Yekini.
