Come January 15th, finalists of the Young Contemporaries 2017 hosted by the Rele Art Foundation, will be exhibiting their works of art.
Founded by Adenrele Sonariwo, the mission of Rele is to “trigger a new found appreciation, followership of and engagement with the arts in Nigeria.” In its second edition, the Young Contemporaries, an initiative that identifies and promotes young visual artists, is one such means through which Rele accomplishes her mission.
The Young Contemporaries 2017 will be working with various media and works will be centered around themes of feminism, cultural and self-identity, racial boundaries, and the duality of human nature. Exhibiting will be:
- Rewa Umunna, a self-taught artist and is trained as a pharmacologist. Her works represent moving trends in race, society, and culture at large.
- Ezekiel Osifeso whose paintings will explore how man is shaped by his environment.
- Marcellina Akpojotor, a mixed media artist whose works raise conversations on how to make the world a better place for women.
- Oladimeji Coker whose photographs will portray issues around the creation story.
- Sejiro Avoseh; his works are deeply conceptual and experimental and they will question the act of predicting or judging a person’s character and personality by outward appearance.
The exhibitions will take place at the Rele Art Gallery, 5 Military Street, Onikan, Lagos, from 3 pm.
