On our menu today is one of Nigeria’s easiest and tastiest sandwiches.  It was a rare Saturday treat from my childhood days; its appearance on the menu was always greeted with excitement.

This sandwich is usually prepared with three ingredients. Yet, it tastes so good that you’d be tempted to gorge yourself on it. This Nigerian sandwich can serve as breakfast or a snack. It can also serve as your children’s school lunch. The best kind of bread for this sandwich is square bread. That way, you’d have two equal halves once it’s cut. I prefer to use sliced bread for this food. For today’s sandwich, I used Happy Foods sliced bread. I used Titus Sardine and Blue Band Butter to make my fillings. Cayenne pepper is an optional addition to the fillings. So, if you don’t want a spicy sandwich, feel free to omit it. But if you do, your level of heat tolerance will determine the quantity of cayenne pepper you use. Ingredients Sliced Bread Butter Sardine Cayenne Pepper Method of Preparation

The first step in making this yummy sandwich is to mix the fillings. As I have already mentioned, the fillings are the butter and the sardine. When you open them, scoop the quantity you need into a soup bowl. Add the pepper and mix all ingredients together. When the ingredients are well blended, take out your sliced bread from the pack. Let me mention here that some people don’t like bread crust on their sandwiches. If you’re one of those people, you can cut yours off. But if you do, don’t throw it away oh! It can be used to make bread crumbs. That said, I prefer to eat every part of my bread. If you’re like me, just spread the filling on one slice of bread and cover it with another slice. Repeat the process till all the slices are filled and covered. Cut them into any shape of your choice. Just like that, your delicious, classic Nigerian sandwich is ready.  The next step is service. If you’re ready to eat, go ahead and serve the sandwich with any hot or cold beverage of your choice. Otherwise, cover them with cling film so they don’t dry out. That way, you can eat them whenever you are ready. I hope you can make your family happy with this classic sandwich. Happy Weekend. Featured image source: The Guardian Nigeria
