Recipe For Chapman

Yummy Medley

On our menu, today is one of Nigeria’s non-alcoholic drink, Chapman. This drink is served in most Nigerian bars and restaurants.  The exact origin of this drink is unknown. But rumour has it that it originated from the Ikoyi Country Club where a bartender prepared it for one of his favourite customers who was a British national named Chapman.

Chapman is usually a mixture of Orange soda like Fanta, lemon and cucumber slices, grenadine syrup and angostura bitters. However, some of these ingredients can be substituted with natural or artificial substitutes. Grenadine syrup, for instance, can be substituted with either a black currant drink like Ribena or with zobo drink while carbonated orange soda can be substituted with freshly squeezed orange juice. This drink can be enjoyed by adults and children alike. However, a little adjustment which is basically the elimination of the alcoholic ingredient, angostura bitters, is needed for children to enjoy this drink. I’m not a fan of Fanta so I used freshly squeezed orange juice for today’s Chapman. I deliberately omitted angostura bitters because my son will share today’s drink with me. I also had some zobo drink in the fridge so I didn’t spend much to make today’s Chapman.
