Qatar 2022: Eguavoen Express Optimism In Eagles Squad Ahead Ghana Clash

The West African neighbours are set to square off in the final round of qualifiers.

Head coach of the Nigerian national team, Augustine Eguavoen, has disclosed that the three-time African champions plan to beat the Black Stars of Ghana in both legs of their Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifier scheduled to hold on March 25 and 29, 2022. Eguavoen who led the Super Eagles to a second-round finish at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations has expressed belief in the present crop of Super Eagles players as they prepare for the first leg encounter in Ghana.

“There is no doubt in my mind. I am a Nigerian, a full-blooded Nigerian, and if you asked me such a question, I think, without missing words, we deserve a place at the World Cup,”
the 1994 Nations Cup winner said.

Despite expressing optimism about the chances of the Super Eagles, Eguavoen also noted that the Black Stars under new coach Otto Addo will be a tough side for the 2013 AFCON winners.

“It’s going to be a very tough game and a tight one as well. We have a lot of mutual respect for one another, and when Ghana plays Nigeria and Nigeria plays Ghana, it’s always tough, it’s always tight,”

the Super Eagles boss added.

“But you see, it’s going to boil down to us trying to go there (Ghana). We will play everything we can to try to win the game, in fact, both games.

“But with no disrespect, because Ghana is a very strong side, individually and collectively. We will just go and fight and try to win the game.”

Nigeria and Ghana last met in a competitive game in the 2010 AFCON semi-final when an Asamoah Gyan goal was all the Black Stars needed to beat the late AmoduShuaibu tutored Nigerian squad.
