Professor Nnenna Oti Becomes The First Female Vice Chancellor Of FUTO

Nigerian women have continued to hit remarkable heights on the global and domestic front. The latest in line is Professor Nnenna Oti who made history on Tuesday, April 13th, 2021, after being announced as the first female Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO).

Prior to her new role, Professor Oti served as the academic institution’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic). News of her new role was made public by Professor John Offem, the Pro-Chancellor/Chairman of the university’s Governing Council. Information disclosed from Offem revealed that Oti beat her closest rival, Professor Ikechukwu Dozie with a total of 75.5 points compared to his 69.7 points, alongside five other candidates to emerge winner of the institution’s top post. Out of a total of 29 applicants that showed interest in the position, only seven were selected for the final round that saw the emergence of Oti as VC.

With this development, Professor Oti who hails from Ebonyi State will take over reigns from her predecessor, Professor Francis Eze, on June 8, 2021, as the 8th substantive Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO). A 1982 first-class graduate in soil science from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Professor Oti would further her education in the same institution and in 1986, she obtained her Masters in Soil Microbiology/Biochemistry. After travelling to Belgium to bag a PGD in Irrigation Engineering with Distinctions in 1987, it would take her 15 years to get her PhD in Soil/Environmental Control from the Federal University of Technology, Owerri in 2002. During the 2014 National Confab, Professor Oti served as a member. Her honours include winning the NUC-Best HOD award (NUDTAS) in 2002. Other (awards) include JP, MSSSA, MASN.FSSSN, and MASA.
