A star-studded lineup of ex-football stars has been prepared for Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s farewell football match, which is scheduled to take place at the remodelled Onikan Stadium, on May 18, 2019.
The high profile game, which is coming 11 days before the governor’s official handover ceremony, will see the likes of former World Footballer of the Year and President of Liberia, George Weah, play alongside other legends including Didier Drogba, Samuel Eto’o Fills, Micheal Essien, and a host of other former top players.
Team Africa, which would be dominated by non-Nigerian former African internationals, will face ex-Super Eagles stars in a monumental encounter.
Speaking to the media on the upcoming game, the chairman of the organizing committee for the match and Nigerian ex-international, Wahidi Akanni, said governor Ambode deserves a befitting farewell.
He added that, for the game to attract the youth across the state, there will be a football clinic at Campos Square.
“The stage has been set for a curtain raiser between Lagos United Under-15 boys and girls against their Kebbi State counterparts.
“This is to spice up the game aimed to celebrating the sports achievements of Ambode in Lagos State.
“The U-15 games are aimed at raising awareness for grassroots football development, which has gained prominence across the country.”
According to Akanni, proceeds from the games will be donated to paying the school fees of indigent children of some ex-Nigerian internationals.
