The last day of the National Professional Football League 2016/2017 season ended as not so much of a jaw-dropper as predictions for the title winner were spot on. For the first time in their history, Plateau United have won the NPFL league title after they defeated former champions Rangers in Jos on Saturday 2-nil. A check for N50mil was awarded the team following their triumph over the Rangers. Prior to their win, the champions were one point ahead of MFM and any mistakes would have cost them severely. Plateau United won the game and finished the season with 66 points thanks to Emeka Umeh who scored in the 25th minute and Benjamin Turba who solidified the victory with another goal in the 85th minute of the game. MFM was not so lucky in Maiduguri as they lost 2:1 to El-Kanemi Warriors. Their defeat to the Warriors kept them at 62 points, 4 points below the Champions. In Calabar, Eyimba climbed up to 61 points on the league table after taking a 1-nil victory against Katsina United. Regardless of their loss, MFM  maintained their place on the league table and will join Plateau United and Eyimba to represent Nigeria at the CAF Confederations Cup. Four teams were sent on relegation; Shooting Stars who lost 2-nil to Niger Tornadoes, ABS who lost 2:1 to Nasarawa United, Gombe United who lost 1-nil to Wiki Tourists and Remo Stars who also lost 1-nil to Sunshine Stars, obtaining positions 17, 18, 19 and 20 respectively.
