Mr Peter Obi who began his tour to the EU, US and Canada to rub minds with Nigerians in the diaspora as well as meet various traditional rulers across the Northern, Southern and Western parts of the country to lobby for their blessings and support, will be reaching out to Nigerian students in campaign tour. According to him, “the Nigerian youths need to be engaged in governance as they are the engine of our nation”. Obi, who has been fond of youths, views this constituency of the nation as the most important and he has often charged them to take back their country.

During the infamous #EndSARS protest on October 20, 2020, where men of the Nigerian military opened fire on armless protesters, Mr Peter Obi condemned the dastard acts, standing with the youths who made up the larger percentage of the protesters. According to Temitope Oriola, the #EndSARS movement is quite literally and metaphorically the battle for the soul of Nigeria. The generals and commanders are young people with trenches on the street. The battle cry is: “Enough; Nigeria can do better than this”.

The young people and the government appear to speak different languages. The young people are forward-looking, urbane and technologically informed. The government; well, it is a work in progress — citizens beware. Many have applauded Peter Obi’s initiative and have stated that it was necessary to get young Nigerians involved in the project of nation-building. According to INEC, there were additionally 10 million fresh voters, most of which are youths. Should Peter Obi get the group on his side, he stands every chance.
